It was incredibly easy to type on thanks to the large, isolated keys that let us get up to full speed in no time.This version of the dv7 is powered by an Intel processor. The dual-core i5-2410M isn’t the fastest we’ve seen at this price, but it still packs a punch in Windows thanks to its 2.3GHz clock speed. HP HSTNN-F05C , This jumps up to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost, helping it reach 54 overall in our multimedia benchmarks. Vertical viewing angles are also very tight, so you'll have to adjust the screen's tilt carefully to get the best picture. Construction seems sound, with little flex in the lid, but sadly there's quite a bounce in the keyboard panel. A score of 85 in the single-threaded image-editing test shows off the Core i5's Turbo Boost, which can push the processor's clock speed up to 2.9GHz,ASUS X54HY Charger , and with two physical cores, expanded to four cores through Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, it's no slouch when you're running multiple programs or using multi-threaded applications such as video-encoding.With decent performance as well as good battery life, a vibrant screen and a sensible selection of ports and other features, ASUS X54K Charger , the U31JG ticks all the right boxes. It may not be the most stylish or exciting design, but at just over £600 it's great value, especially when you consider the two year warranty, so it wins our Best Buy award.Take one look at the Eee Slate and it’s clear to see that Asus has produced something rather special; with sharp lines, ASUS X54L Charger , plenty of brushed metal and a textured finish, it’s a great looking tablet. Using the Slate, it was immediately obvious that Asus understands Windows isn’t the ideal operating system for a touchscreen device. Fujitsu LifeBook B2542 Battery , The single hardware button on the front of the device sensibly defaults to the alt-tab keyboard shortcut, which makes switching between programs much quicker than using the touchscreen. Another useful addition is a hardware button to toggle the on-screen keyboard. This was quicker than dragging it into place by hand, but typing still felt slow and cumbersome, even on the large multi-point capacitive display. Fujitsu LifeBook B2545 Battery , Thankfully Asus bundles a Bluetooth keyboard with the Slate, so you can type as you would on a regular laptop if you need to. It has a slightly curved layout which can take a short while to get used to, but it’s still far easier than using the tablet itself.Asus also supplies a stylus (which it would prefer we called a Digitiser pen) for natural text input. Obviously this is slower than using a keyboard, but the character recognition was very accurate. Fujitsu LifeBook B2547 Battery , When you aren’t using it, a slot in the back of the unit holds the stylus to stop it getting misplaced. There are two USB ports if you prefer to use a keyboard and mouse, as the leather slip case doubles as a desk stand.

The version we tested had a dual-core i3-2330M running at 2.2GHz, but Dell has just upgraded the laptop to a 2.3GHz i3-2350M without changing the price. The J590M chip doesn’t have Turbo Boost so can’t overclock itself automatically for increased performance. Its Hyper Threading technology does double the number of cores seen by Windows and can help in multi-threaded applications, but an overall score of J658N 38 in our multimedia benchmarks shows this is only of limited help - the new version will be around 5% faster. The laptop will also struggle to run multiple applications without slowing down, as it only has 2GB of RAM.The laptop M457P uses the processor's built-in graphics, but it’s mostly limited to video playback. It can handle 720p footage on the laptop screen, or 1080p video on an external display using the HDMI port, but playing modern games is almost out of the question. The V131 could only manage 13.3fps in our Dirt3 test, 02MTH3 so you’ll have to stick to older titles.At least the low-powered components help prevent the battery from draining quickly while on the move – in our light-use test, the V131 managed to last over eight hours away from the mains. 451-11469 This means you should be able to get close to a full working day from the six-cell battery. Dell has also made other 0D839N improvements to the new Vostro – all its ports have moved from the rear, where they were difficult to reach, to the sides of the laptop. Now, the single USB and two USB3 ports, HDMI and VIGA inputs, memory card reader and headset audio jack J1KND are easier to reach.We liked the V131's Chiclet-style keys, which are spaced widely apart and have plenty of bounce. There’s no numeric keypad, but the punctuation keys were all in the places we would expect. The laptop's touchpad feels compact, even when controlling the small 04YRJH 13in display, as we couldn’t span the desktop in a single movement. A quick trip to the driver settings menu solved the problem, but we would have preferred a little more room to manoeuvre. At least the touchpad buttons felt firm and responsive, registering our clicks consistently. KRJVC In the configuration we saw, the Vostro V131 felt slightly underpowered for intensive tasks, but was still ideally suited to web browsing, word processing and other work-related tasks. With this specification, it's also good value for an ultra-portable laptop, 451-11469 and if you don't need the 3G modem and specify Windows 7 Home Premium rather than Professional, you can knock the price down to a bargain £514 including VAT. If an ultrabook is out of your price range but you want a laptop for travel, the Vostro V131 is a great buy.02MTH3

This is the second time we’ve seen the 'facelifted' Dell Inspiron 15R, but this 312-1123 model lacks the dedicated graphics card of its more expensive sibling - the N00Q1535. Instead, it relies on Intel’s 312-1127integrated graphics to keep the price below £500.Without dedicated graphics, the Inspiron struggles to run modern games. It produced 13fps in our Dirt 3 test, so you’ll have to either sacrifice resolution and detail settings or stick to older titles. Watching HD video is no problem, either at 720p on the laptop or 1080p on an external display over HDMI.Graphics performance aside, the 15R J70W7 JWPHF is an impressive performer in desktop tasks thanks to its Core i5 processor. With two cores, the i5-2430M sped through our multimedia benchmarks with an overall score of 49 – it can handle almost every desktop application you can throw at it without missing a beat. R795X We're big fans of Dell’s laptop displays, and the 15R has a stunning 15.6in panel. The resolution might be run of the mill at 1,366x768, but it has fantastic image quality thanks to a glossy finish and ultra-bright LED backlight, which makes colours look incredibly vivid. Viewing angles are slightly better than average, and there’s a reasonable amount of screen tilt,WHXY3 so you should have no trouble using the 15R in most lighting conditions. The pair of stereo speakers underneath produces decent enough audio for watching videos, but they're still poor compared with most TVs.04YRJH

At 2.6kg, this is no featherweight,J1KND but you should still be able to take the 15R with you on the move. Its great battery life of six and a half hours in our light-use test means you might not have to take the charger with you. The whole chassis is surprisingly compact thanks to its 9T48V recessed screen hinge that sits on top of the laptop, rather than at its edge.This design lets Dell put some of the ports on the rear edge, spacing them out and making cables more manageable when sat at a desk. On top of the combined eSATA/USB port, there are also two USB3 ports to speed up file 4T7JN transfers for the latest external USB3 hard disks. You also get a multiformat card reader on one side and a DVD re-writer on the other.We had no trouble typing on the full-size keyboard; both the QWERTY keys and the separate numerical keypad have pleasant keys, 383CWalthough there was noticeable flex in the keyboard tray. The generously-sized touchpad is better, with a smooth finish that creates minimal friction. Despite its small size, the QWERTY keys are almost all full-size andCompaq Armada PP2070 Charger well-spaced apart from each other. The oddly-shaped rectangular touchpad takes some getting used to, but its textured finish creates minimal friction which makes navigating the desktop very smooth. The two touchpad buttons beneath it sit precariously close to the edge of the chassis, but they're large enough to be pleasant to use. Compaq Armada PP2050 Charger Like almost all netbooks, the 10.1in screen has a low 1,024x600 resolution. Although this is fine for working on a single document, you might have to scroll horizontally as well as vertically on some websites and you won’t be able to run multiple programs side-by-side. Compaq Armada M300 Charger Image quality is about average, with fairly accurate colours and plenty of brightness. The glossy, reflective screen finish makes it difficult to use in bright conditions, but there’s 180 degrees of screen tilt to find the perfect viewing angle.HP COMPAQ NX9110 Charger

Unsurprisingly, connectivity isn’t the Mini’s strong point, although three USB ports Compaq Presario R3000 Charger are respectable for a netbook of this size.
