HP Compaq nx6140 Battery
The dm1 uses AMD's "Vision" platform,HP HSTNN-XB2C WY164AA , a combination of processor and graphics chipset - which is part of AMD's Fusion line-up. The graphics chip is a Radeon HD 6310 with 384MB of dedicated RAM, but it's not very powerful, scoring only 11fps in Call of Duty 4. Even with graphical settings turned right down, you'll struggle to play any modern 3D game. HP HSTNN-XB1Z , It can decode HD video, however, and the screen's resolution is ideal for 720p video. With an overall score of 11 in our benchmarks, the processor's not very powerful either. However, this laptop is still quicker than most netbooks and it felt responsive enough for word processing and web browsing. HP HSTNN-XB1Y Battery life at just over seven hours is impressive and this laptop should last for most of a working day without having to be plugged in. Given it weighs just 1.6kg, you can easily carry this model with you everywhere you go.Behind a long metal grille that runs along the front edge of the dm1 is a set of Altec Lansing speakers. These are surprisingly loud and have a clear sound, HP HSTNN-XB1X , but they lack bass, so for watching movies you'll want to either plug in an external set of speakers, or output both sound and video via the HDMI out to a home cinema amp. There's also a headphone jack, and as with a lot of other laptops we've seen, it accepts headsets too, much like a smartphone.HP HSTNN-XA18
Tapering towards the front, the dm1's keyboard is at a slight angle, HP QK648AA , which makes it more comfortable to type on. It has flat, separated keys with a crisp, light action that gives excellent feedback for touch-typists. There's a double-height Enter key and much of the layout is standard. HP 614564-751 , Our only complaint would be the function keys - instead of using the Fn key as a modifier, they now perform shortcuts by default, although this behaviour can be changed in the BIOS.Once again, however, HP has opted for an all-in-one touchpad - a single,HP 614565-721 , touch-sensitive surface with a clicking action along the bottom edge. This might look smart, but it's annoying, as clicking often means you move the cursor and miss your target. With benchmark scores a lot higher than on the average netbook, the HP Pavilion dm1-3100sa seems like a decent laptop for standard office tasks. Sadly, the poor touchpad and dim screen detract heavily from it. HP ED03 , The MSI GE620 costs only £50 more, but has a quad-core processor, a much faster graphics chip, weighs only 2.4kg and comes with a two-year warranty. With its brushed metal-effect chassis and smooth curves, the dv7 is one of the best looking mid-range laptops HP has produced in a long time, HP ED06 , but it has function as well as form. The five Beats Audio speakers, Blu-ray player and 17.3in screen could make it the ideal choice for multimedia playback. It doesn’t have a full HD resolution, but the 1,600x900 display is big enough to make the Windows desktop feel very spacious. HP ED06066 , Contrast was reasonable, as long as we sat directly in front of the screen; with plenty of screen tilt, it’s frustrating that viewing angles are so poor. Colours weren’t particularly vibrant, even with the glossy screen coating, but the backlight was at least bright enough to help reduce screen glare from overhead lighting.HP ED06DF
The much-lauded speakers were impressive for a laptop. HP HSTNN-LB1Z , They're loud, making enough noise to fill a medium-sized room, but the small subwoofer couldn’t provide much bass. They was no distortion even at full volume, so you could easily watch catch-up TV without having to reach for your headphones or connect external speakers. HP HSTNN-LB1X , We appreciated HP’s decision to revamp the touchpad; previous laptops had an awful touch-sensitive pad that rarely worked, but the dedicated buttons used here are a huge improvement. The touchpad felt very responsive, and even lights up with the press of a shortcut key. The QWERTY keyboard has also been improved slightly, HP HSTNN-IB1X , but the function keys still activate multimedia shortcuts by default which can be annoying. It was incredibly easy to type on thanks to the large, isolated keys that let us get up to full speed in no time. This version of the dv7 is powered by an Intel processor. The dual-core i5-2410M isn’t the fastest we’ve seen at this price, but it still packs a punch in Windows thanks to its 2.3GHz clock speed. HP HSTNN-F05C , This jumps up to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost, helping it reach 54 overall in our multimedia benchmarks. An ample 6GB of RAM will help with multitasking, but thankfully this performance doesn’t have a huge impact on battery life. We saw four and three quarter hours in our light-use test. However, at 2.9kg, you’ll certainly notice it in your bag when on the move.HP HSTNN-CB1Z
It might handle multimedia well, but the dv7 is also capable of some light gaming. HP HSTNN-CB1Y , The AMD Radeon 6490M isn’t the fastest, but it still managed 25.3fps in our Dirt 3 test. If you turn off anti-aliasing, you should find that most games will play reasonably well. Naturally, the card can also decode HD video, HP Compaq nc6120 Battery , either on the laptop in 720p or in 1080p on an external display using the HDMI output. Other connectivity is more than acceptable, with two USB3 ports, two more standard USB, a multi-format card reader and analogue audio outputs. The latest dv7 is a return to form for HP, mainly thanks to the fact that the awful touchpads that plagued previous models have been ditched. HP Compaq nc6140 Battery , This version’s Intel processor is certainly faster than the AMD equivalent, but you pay for the price; it’s over £300 more than the AMD-powered model the HP dv7-6000sa. You also get a slightly better graphics card and longer battery life, but the MSI GE620 is faster still and has a better warranty. Unless you prefer a bigger, higher resolution screen, HP Compaq nc6200 Battery , the MSI is the better choice for most people.HP’s Envy range of laptops is undeniably stylish, thanks to their minimalist design and smooth lines. This special edition is the result of the company’s collaboration with hip-hop mogul Dr Dre, and we think it looks even better than the vanilla model; the all-black body is reminiscent of a previous generation MacBook, but with its own distinct design thanks to the metallic silver finish around the chassis edge.HP Compaq nc6220 Battery
Considering HP has gone to great lengths to secure Dr Dre as the face of the Beats range, HP Compaq nx6330 Battery , we were amazed that the Envy’s speakers barely sounded any better than almost every other laptop. Quiet and slightly tinny, the barely discernable bass notes disappear altogether when deactivating Beats mode, which is nothing more than an equaliser pre-set,HP Compaq nx6325 Battery , making us question why anyone would bother turning it off at all. It was loud enough that we could still hear it clearly from the other side of a small room, but we would definitely recommend using headphones for anything other than the odd YouTube video. It might not be great for audio, HP Compaq nx6320 Battery , but underneath the great-looking chassis the internal components are still able to perform when it counts. A first generation Intel Core i7-720QM processor runs at a relatively sedate 1.6GHz, but when in Turbo Boost mode it can increase to a much faster 2.8GHz. Anyone used to multi-tasking will appreciate 4GB of RAM and the 500GB hard disk should be big enough for a respectable multimedia collection. HP Compaq nx6315 Battery , Despite having a quad-core processor, the Envy still can’t match a new dual-core Sandy Bridge chip for flat-out power, as shown in our multimedia benchmarks. An overall score of 55 is still impressive, but considering the Envy’s price it’s a shame you aren’t getting cutting-edge technology. The other downside is battery life; with just three and a half hours in our light-use test, HP Compaq nx6310 Battery , you won’t want to go too far without the mains adaptor.Graphics muscle comes courtesy of AMD’s Mobility Radeon 5650 chipset; it’s already a generation old, but still capable of gaming at reasonable levels of detail. HP Compaq nx6300 Battery

The Envy completed our new DirectX 11 Dirt 3 racing benchmark (1,280 x 720, 4x anti-aliasing and High detail) with 33.8fps and the game still ran at a smooth 31fps at the laptop's native screen resolution of 1,366x768. Unsurprisingly with this much graphics power, HP Compaq nc6230 Battery , the Envy had no problem with high definition video. 720p footage played smoothly on the laptop itself and 1080p content looked just as good on an external display. The laptop screen's image quality was slightly above average, but not a patch on the fantastic Radiance display seen on previous Envy models. HP Compaq nc6300 Battery , The 1,366x768 resolution is smaller than we would like, but images at least looked reasonably sharp and colours were as accurate as we would expect from a TN (as opposed to IPS) panel. Viewing angles were very limited and not helped by the ultra-glossy screen finish, but plenty of screen tilt helps to compensate. We were hoping that HP would have fixed the Envy’s touchpad for this limited edition, HP Compaq nc6320 Battery , but unfortunately the Beats edition suffers from the same problems; because the buttons are integrated into the touchpad, any movement over the dividing line will send the mouse cursor flying across the screen. Thankfully the backlit QWERTY keyboard is a much better. Each isolated key has a reasonable amount of tactile feedback and very short travel times, although the wrist rest can get a little toasty after several hours’ use. The red backlight is subtle enough not to be distracting, and you can also disable it.HP Compaq nc6400 Battery
